Serving Flint, Genesee County, and the World

Social Justice and Outreach Ministry at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Flint (UUCF) has a long history of direct giving, volunteerism in the larger community, support for oppressed and minority group rights and issue advocacy. Many see this as our “UU”nique version of evangelism and mission work guided by reason, compassion, dialogue and tolerance. Whether sparked by member, denomination effort, clergy, secular partner or church board initiative, all efforts must align with our principles and be non-partisan.

FACT

Flint Area Congregations Together is an affiliate of Michigan Faith In Action and People Improving Communities through Organizing.  These are state and national level congregation-based community organizing efforts to advance systemic change in housing, education, health care, public safety and employment communities encompassing all racial and ethnic groups and faith traditions. We are rooted in the needs of local congregations and neighborhoods, each of which develops a local organizing ministry, while coordinating efforts in eight other regions of Michigan.

Our actions include Second Sunday donation giving to six local nonprofit groups which are chosen annually by member nomination and election. Click Here to see where are donating this year. Six additional monthly collections support UU Service Committee, Flint Area Congregations Together dues, member leadership development and Michigan UU Social Justice Network.

UUCF Pantry

Located in the upstaires Religious Education wing of our church we maintain a pantry of non-perishable food items and toiletries. This is available to all UUCF member, friends of the church, and the greater community.  A basket for donations can be found just as you enter the church, in the narthex.

Standing on the Side of Love is an interfaith public advocacy campaign that seeks to harness love’s power to stop oppression. It is sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Association and all are welcome to join.

Please see www.standingonthesideoflove.org for more information.

Other Partners
Welcoming Congregation Program

We are officially a Welcoming Congregation.  We completed our certification program in 1999, renewed our commitment in 2005, and  repeated and reaffirmed in 2010; but this journey of justice and inclusion is ongoing.

The Welcoming Congregation Program is a completely volunteer program for congregations that see a need to be inclusive towards lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people.

Family Promise of Genesee County

We partner with Court Street United Methodist to help Family Promise in their mission to build a network of local congregations and volunteers to provide shelter and service to homeless families and keep them together in a time of crisis.
Our goal is to assist families during temporary periods of homelessness, encourage them to create an achievable vision and develop a strong foundation for self-sufficiency.

Eisenhower Elementary School
Mentoring Partnership

Many individuals spend hours as community activists and volunteers but in addition UUCF has a five plus year partnership with nearby Flint Community School Eisenhower Elementary www.flintschools.org. Several members mentor, tutor, support work in the greenhouse, design and plant an outdoor learning space and support the Backpack Food Program.

Green Sanctuary

The UUA provides the framework for congregations to begin specific projects and activities that lead to recognition as a Green Sanctuary through candidacy and then accreditation. Through this process, congregations embark on an exploration of what it means to live today within a religious community on an imperiled Earth by becoming stewards of our environment.
