What an amazing General Assembly this year for Religious Educators! If you didn’t know in the past Professional Religious Educators have not been able to vote at the business meetings during General Assembly unless they were Master Level Credentialed. This has left very few professionals with the ability to vote for the policies, procedures, and motions that many times directly affect us. This year though we won the vote! All religious professionals that are members of LREDA (liberal religious educators association) or religious organization recognized by the UUA and approved by the Board of Trustees and are employed by a congregation now can vote and have our voices heard. This example of living our Fifth Principle was heartwarming and so exciting for all of us. In addition to this the UUA board will now have two youth trustees to share their voices in places of leadership. Those two youth will help create the direction of the denomination that will be theirs in the future. It was youth leadership at its finest.
LREDA also received the UUA President’s award this year. The President's Annual Award for Volunteer Service to the UUA is given to the person/organization designated by the President as having given extraordinary and vital service to the UUA as a volunteer. Along with that award was $1,000 to be donated to the organization of our choice. The LREDA board voted to donate the money to BLUU (Black Lives of Unitarian Universalism).
This was an exciting year to be a religious professional and I can’t wait to see what comes next.
