A Thank You, An Apology, A Pledge, A Goal
Thanks: The Sharp 2020 Committee sincerely thanks all UUCF members that generously made donations during the last brunch presented by the Sharp 2020 Committee on Sunday, April 22.
Apology: This expression of gratitude is tempered by our acknowledgement that the quality of that brunch was substandard in many ways.
Pledge: The committee pledges that future brunches—including one scheduled for the fall season—will be much better.
Goal: The primary goal of the committee is to plan a year-long, community-wide celebration in 2020 to focus on acceptance and inclusion. The work of Waitstill and Martha Sharp will be a starting place for that celebration and may include: re-naming(s); dedication(s); at least one special Sunday service; another book study featuring Sharp’s War by Artemis Joukowsky; another showing of the film Sharp’s War by documentarian Ken Burns; visit(s) to Flint by Sharp descendant(s) and or survivor(s); special curriculum for UUCF youth; a multi-generational project.
Martha and Waitstill Sharp, at great personal sacrifice, helped to rescue potential victims of the Holocaust in fascist-dominated, World War II-era Europe. Martha recruited support for their efforts in Flint. Waitstill later ministered at UUCF.
