Social Justice Update-February

March 1, 2018

Social Justice and Outreach

January’s 2nd Sunday donation raised _____ for the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee.  This will be combined with any Guest at Your Table contributions.  Please bring in any late/forgotten donations to be sent off to UUSC.

February’s 2nd Sunday donation will be for Michigan Faith in Action.  UUCF has been a covenanting member of MFA (formerly FACT) since 2009.  Consider attending 3rd Thursday Board meetings at member churches.  As a statewide interfaith organizing initiative, MFA sponsors educational, advocacy and legislative efforts around poverty, criminal justice reform, education quality and health care access as well as voter turnout.  During critical legislative actions members gather for Truth and Justice Tuesdays at the Capitol in Lansing.  Check out flyers in narthex brochure rack and/or contact Rayna Bick for further information.

FOOD PANTRY needs continue.  Please bring a ready to eat, nonperishable item or personal products and leave in the red wagon in our narthex.

COLD WEATHER NEEDS:  If you have extra warm socks, gently used boots, hats, gloves please bring and leave in wagon OR PLACE in green lid plastic tub in coat rack area.  They will be delivered to local adult service agencies.

Civil Rights Timeline on display!!

During January and February please take time to read the laminated display in the hallway off the narthex at UUCF.  Several years ago Sheila Smith and Jennifer Howard participated in a UUA sponsored trip tracing many key events in the struggle for equal rights for African Americans.  They worked hard to document and preserve the images and history shared on this journey.  Like the Holocaust, many of the brave persons sharing their stories are aging and dying.  Let us not forget the courage and martyrs of this struggle.  Remember: gather, protest in peace, demand justice and vote!
